Let's discover how Prof. Fares is reshaping medical brilliance through innovation and leadership at ZHUMC!

A Journey of Discovery and Dedication

The root of Prof. Youssef Fares' successful career in medicine is the initial interest he had in the human nervous system. "Since the time I started my medical training, I was fascinated by the complex sophistication of the nervous system, its neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and by the finesse needed to operate on it," he says. This fascination and admiration for the complexity of the human body directed him towards neurosurgery as a specialty that, in its day, promised both challenge and the ability to create a real difference in patients' lives. He feels that "the capacity to actually improve a patient's life through careful intervention was both inspiring and humbling," and this aspiration continues to push his practice forward today.

After obtaining his MD and PhD in Spain Prof. Youssef Fares trained around Europe to strengthen his skills further as he enriched his knowledge pool in the subject. His experience attained decisive significance when he went back to Lebanon. The only aim that guided him upon his return was to set up both clinical care facilities and medical educational courses for the future generations of physicians. His service as a faculty member and later Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Lebanese University helped him to combine his passion for neurosurgery with his commitment to nurturing young leaders who would define medicine across Lebanon.

"I have worked to advance Al-Zahraa Hospital into a top-performing academic medical center where patient care, education, and research come together," he clarifies. The health care system of ZHUMC reflects his broader vision towards creating a clinical and educational system which integrates medical education with exceptional patient care. He spearheaded the establishment of the Neuroscience Research Center (NRC) to promote neuroscience research and build next-generation scientists and spearhead institutional transformation at ZHUMC. Along its development the NRC became the prime academic center of innovation and excellence in Lebanon and globally.

Visionary Leadership Amidst Challenges

As CEO and Chairman of Al-Zahraa Hospital, Prof. Youssef Fares must contend with a special group of challenges that few healthcare leaders worldwide have had to deal with. Lebanon's healthcare system, already beset on all sides by the effects of political and economic uncertainty, has had to contend with an even more volatile environment in recent times. In defiance of all those challenges, however, he remains steadfastly committed to ensuring that ZHUMC not only survives, but flourishes.

"My main focus is making the institution resilient in the face of the current challenges in Lebanon and the region," he says. The financial volatility in Lebanon, combined with rising costs of operations and shortfalls in key medical items, is a daily challenge for healthcare professionals. "Maintaining financial stability while upholding the utmost standards of patient care is paramount," he insists. "This involves both a strategic plan for resource management and a focus on innovation and being responsive."

One of the more important strategies that ZHUMC has used is an emphasis on academic opportunities and research projects, which he considers vital to attracting and keeping quality medical professionals. "One of the top priorities is reversing the brain drain by building an environment that keeps and attracts top medical talent," he observes. His vision is not only to enhance ZHUMC's ranking as a medical academic center but also to adopt new technologies, including artificial intelligence, to enhance hospital performance and patient outcomes.

“Embracing artificial intelligence and working to enhance AI literacy among our workforce is central to our efforts,” he elaborates. “AI-driven solutions will help streamline hospital operations, optimize patient care, and improve decision-making.” The integration of AI into the hospital’s operations is part of a larger strategy to ensure that ZHUMC remains at the forefront of healthcare innovation in Lebanon.

Transformative Initiatives to Enhance Patient Care

ZHUMC has made tremendous advancements in patient care and medical education under the leadership of Prof. Youssef Fares. The hospital has expanded greatly, with the addition of a new intensive specialized care floor. In its emphasis on cutting-edge surgical technology, ZHUMC has renovated its operating rooms and expanded its ICU to 45 beds, which is among the country's largest critical care units.

“Increasing our ICU capacity and building advanced operating rooms equipped with cutting-edge surgical technology are part of our commitment to providing high-quality care for even the most complex cases,” says Prof. Youssef Fares. In addition to infrastructure advancements, ZHUMC has also installed a helipad to facilitate the rapid transfer of critical patients from various regions across Lebanon, ensuring timely access to life-saving interventions.

These developments speak to a focus on infrastructure and patient care as well as scientific innovation and integrity. This was a commitment that had international recognition when the Neuroscience Research Center of ZHUMC was awarded the International World Quality Commitment Award 2017 in the GOLD Category in Paris, marking the Center's important contribution in defining the future of neuroscience research.

In addition to physical growth, ZHUMC has set up medical centers of excellence in several specialties such as cancer treatment, neurological sciences, bariatric surgery, and urological care. The hospital continues to expand specialized programs that provide patients individualized care targeted to their distinct requirements. Particularly, advanced laparoscopic procedures are increasingly used across a number of surgical specialties such as urology, bariatric surgery, and gynecology, leading to greater surgical accuracy, shorter recovery periods, and better patient outcomes.

But his vision for ZHUMC extends far beyond patient care. He has also focused on elevating medical education at the institution. “We have recruited highly trained physicians and surgeons from leading academic institutions,” he notes. “Our tumor boards, which bring together experts from various subspecialties, foster a multidisciplinary approach to complex cases, ensuring that patient care is evidence-based and collaborative.”

The hospital shows its teaching focus through its status as a teaching hospital with Lebanese University. With this collaborative arrangement medical students receive hands-on experience and engage in research activities and professional studies. In order to facilitate exchange of skills among healthcare professionals ZHUMC hosts various medical congresses in addition to workshops and training sessions.

Navigating the Healthcare Challenges of Lebanon

Lebanon's health sector is plagued by many challenges, but Prof. Youssef Fares has confidence in the capability of healthcare institutions to overcome these challenges. The biggest challenge is the persistent shortage of medical supplies, compounded by financial instability. As he describes, "The financial burden is most severely felt, as increased operational expenses, fueled by having to purchase fuel for power, meet with a growing number of patients who cannot pay for care." Further, the exodus of skilled professionals has put additional pressure on already strained hospitals.

However, Prof. Youssef Fares is adamant that healthcare institutions can emerge from these problems. Our strategy has been one of resilience over the long term and adaptation," he says. "By having a solid supply chain plan and being proactive in retaining our workforce, we continue to deliver patients the care they require." ZHUMC's focus on disaster readiness and its ability to offer necessary care in times of crisis have helped make sure the hospital continues to thrive even in the midst of instability from within the nation.

Technology’s Role in Transforming Healthcare

The integration of technology in the healthcare sector is one area that Prof. Youssef Fares has identified as a major priority for Lebanon, particularly since the country's healthcare system is looking to modernize. Telehealth, AI, and robotics are just some of the technologies that are about to transform the delivery of healthcare in Lebanon. "Artificial intelligence is already transforming diagnostics, treatment planning, and hospital operations," he comments. "AI-based imaging analysis and patient outcome predictive analytics hold the promise to revolutionize clinical decision-making.

But roadblocks to broad technology adoption exist in Lebanon, such as infrastructure issues and spasmodic policies of regulation. "To have AI reach its full potential, there need to be investments made in digital health literacy and infrastructure improvements," he cautions. Similarly, telemedicine, a promising solution to increase access to care, has struggled with internet connectivity issues and reimbursement policy issues.

In spite of all these obstacles, Prof. Youssef Fares is optimistic that the future of healthcare in Lebanon will be determined by technology. "A health care technology-prioritized national strategy will be needed," he opines.

Shaping the Future Through Mentorship and Leadership

For Prof. Youssef Fares, mentorship has been intrinsic to his professional work. "Having witnessed students, residents, and young professionals become leaders in their own right has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career," he says. With his leadership at ZHUMC and through his work at the Lebanese University, Prof. Youssef Fares has guided hundreds of students and young physicians, inspiring in them a sense of purpose and commitment to the profession.

One of the main efforts in his dedication to education and cooperation is the Lebanese Academy, established with the vision of bringing together specialists from various fields to propel knowledge and innovation forward. This academy promotes inter-disciplinary research, training, and academic exchange, with the goal of keeping Lebanon a center for medical and scientific excellence.

In the future, Prof. Youssef Fares expects to leave a permanent legacy in the field of healthcare. "Institutions, research programs, and intellectual frameworks should not be made dependent on one individual but should continue to evolve with each new generation who develop from them," he explains. For him, the measure of success does not come from individual achievements but from the difference made to generations to come. Through his work at the ZHUMC and the Neuroscience Research Center, Prof. Youssef Fares continues to provide opportunities for young professionals so that his legacy will last far beyond his time there.

Dr. Youssef Fares is a beacon of leadership due to the fact that contemporary medicine depends on creative solutions as well as tough resolve and outstanding commitment. As a neurosurgeon and healthcare administrator he continues to play a central role in shaping the future of medical practice in Lebanon and broader global healthcare.
